This summer, Kyra Sedgwick reprises her Golden Globe-winning role as Deputy Chief Brenda Johnson in the fifth season of TNT’s “The Closer.” Her work as the LAPD’s master interrogator has also earned her Emmy and SAG award nominations.

The 5th season of “The Closer” begins Monday at 9pm on TNT. She talks about the show, and some of the changes her character will undergo in this interview with Tony, Lauren, and Jillian.

“The Closer” is looking at a great change in the fifth season when a member of the squad is gone. In the press release, TNT revealed that Deputy Chief Brenda Johnson “loses someone very dear to her” as she starts adjusting to married life. Lead actress Kyra Sedgwick added, “It’ll be quick and painless, and it’ll be soon.”

The departure is not the only highlighted change in the new season. The intra-office conflict between Sgt. Gabriel and Det. Daniels is resolved for good and another squad member goes through a complete attitude change after falling in love. The economy forces one of Brenda’s detectives to take a second job, while the fatal shooting of a suspect leads to career complications for another.

“After four years of really getting to know these characters, the fifth season marks a great time to see how they react to major changes both inside and outside the squad room,” said series creator James Duff. “We’re very excited about where we’re taking Brenda and her squad in the coming year.”

The new season begins Monday, June 8, welcoming Mary McDonnell as a guest star to play the new internal affairs officer. “She’s the complete opposite of me; we’re at odds,” Sedgwick revealed. “Brenda’s always had antagonists who are men, so it’ll be great to have an antagonist who’s a woman.”

The Closer – 5th season starts June 8th (US)
Written by on May 17th, 2009

THE CLOSER Fifth season to launch Monday, June 8, at 9 p.m. (ET/PT)

It’s going to be a year of change for Deputy Police Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson and her Major Crimes unit as TNT’s THE CLOSER returns for its fifth season. The record-breaking crime drama, which stars Golden Globe winner Kyra Sedgwick, continues to dominate the industry as ad-supported cable’s #1 series of all time. Sedgwick gives an unforgettable performance as Deputy Chief Johnson, a former Atlanta detective brought to Los Angeles to head a special LAPD homicide unit. She is a top-notch investigator with unparalleled interrogation skills and a track record for closing nearly every case with a suspect’s confession. On the home front, she’s not quite as adept at handling her personal relationships. Instead, work tends to take first priority in her life and even threatened to derail her wedding in the season-four finale.

This acclaimed series also features a stellar ensemble cast that has garnered three Screen Actors Guild Award ensemble nominations. Playing Brenda’s highly capable squad are Corey Reynolds (The Terminal), G.W. Bailey (M*A*S*H), Tony Denison (Melrose Place), Raymond Cruz (Collateral Damage), Michael Paul Chan (Arrested Development) and Phillip P. Keene (The D.A.). The series also stars Jon Tenney (The Division) as Brenda’s husband, FBI Agent Fritz Howard; J.K. Simmons (Juno, Burn After Reading) as her demanding boss, Will Pope; and Robert Gossett (Arlington Road) as the head of Robbery-Homicide, Commander Taylor.

Since its premiere in 2005, THE CLOSER has earned numerous ad-supported cable viewership records, ranking as the #1 series of all time and scoring the #1 series telecast of all time. Each year, the show’s audience grows larger, with its 2008 episodes averaging more than 7.3 million viewers. It is produced by the team behind Nip/Tuck.

The Bernard Madoff Ponzi scandal has touched many people, including the family of actress Kyra Sedgwick, but on the brighter side, the new season of her hit series, “The Closer,” is under way, and getting rave reviews.

“The Closer” just resumed its fourth season. Sedgwick stars as Los Angeles Police Department Deputy Police Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson.

This year is different than the others, however, Early Show co-anchor Harry Smith pointed out.

“It’s actually just five episodes, but it’s really great. It’s a lot of personal stuff for Brenda,” Sedgwick said.

Sedgwick says the ante has been upped this time around with pushing personal stories.

Kyra Sedgwick’s ‘The Closer’ not done yet

For actress Kyra Sedgwick, it’s the public’s approval that makes it worth being away from her family for six months to tape her critically acclaimed series “The Closer.”

But she may be getting more approval from her peers, too.

Sedgwick will walk the red carpet again Sunday night at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, where she is nominated for a fourth consecutive year for outstanding performance by a female actor in a drama series for her role as Deputy Chief Brenda Johnson. She’s also won a Golden Globe for her performance, in 2007.

The TNT series resumes Monday night where it left off in September with what Sedgwick called “a fantastic five episodes.” (TNT is a unit of Time Warner, as is CNN.)

“I said to the writers, ‘I really want a lot of personal stuff for Brenda,’ ” Sedgwick said. “I feel like there’s some of those personal quiet moments with her alone, is something that I’ve been missing as an actor, and I feel like the audience has been missing, too.
